Balance transfer
A balance transfer moves your existing loan to a new lender at a lower rate. It is worth it when the saving over the rest of the tenure is clearly more than the costs: the new lender’s processing fee, legal and valuation charges, and any charge your current lender makes for closing the loan.
The calculator shows the break-even point, the number of months it takes for the monthly saving to cover those charges. If you plan to close the loan before then, the transfer may not pay off. Transfers are most common for home loans and loans against property.
Part payment
After a part payment, you can usually keep the same EMI and finish the loan sooner, or keep the same end date and pay a smaller EMI. Keeping the EMI and cutting the tenure normally saves more interest. Cutting the EMI eases your monthly budget.
Check your loan agreement before you pay. For floating-rate loans taken by individuals for personal use, RBI rules do not allow prepayment charges. Fixed-rate loans and some business loans can carry a charge.

They are close estimates based on standard formulas. A lender’s figures can differ because of its charges, the disbursement date, rounding and, for floating-rate loans, rate changes over time.
Use the rate in your offer letter or Key Facts Statement if you have one. If not, use a rate you have been quoted and try a slightly higher one too, to see how the EMI changes.
